Restaurant - Thai

Excellent Thai food served in an elegant environment.

"…The Spice is a Thai restaurant of uncommon authenticity and style that seems to be paving the way toward a broader ethnic reach in this college town."

The food was certainly not the average ethnic fair here in Ames. I got a duck entree that was tender and well seasoned. I sampled the dishes my friends ordered and each was equally as well prepared. Usually the ethnic places tend to cater to Iowa seasoning sensibilities, which means ridiculously sugary or ridiculously salty. This was certainly not the case here, you could actually taste the coriander, lime or the peanut. The waitress serving us was attentive and was helpful in explaining what ingredients were used in the preparation of our meal.

The Spice was amazing when it opened but the food and service have taken a nose-dive. After our experience yesterday, we won‘t be back. We ordered steamed dumplings, which are terrific, but unfortunately they are always served lukewarm at best, and yesterday they were stone cold. My husband found bones and cartilage in his Bangkok Duck. We had to wait a while to flag someone down to send it back. The manager came out and apologized, but said that although they do the best they can to de-bone the duck, there will be bones in there. This is a health hazard, and is a lawsuit waiting to happen, as this kind of dish should NEVER have bones in it, and there is no warning about bones being in it on the menu. Then the manager asked him if he wanted them to make the Bangkok Duck for him again, but said that it would still have bones in it. When he said he wasn‘t interested in that, she offered to give him back his original plate because they still had it in the back. This is TERRIBLE customer service! The server was inattentive at best. We waited 20 minutes for him to pick up our credit card that was on the edge of the table (he saw it and ignored it/us).

A little pricier, but totally worth it. Last time I went there, my boyfriend ordered one of the chef‘s specials, and it was awesome - interesting flavor, unlike anything we‘d had at a Thai place before (and we eat at a lot of Thai places). A lot of thought, effort, and careful preparation goes into their dishes, and it shows! The restaurant is tastefully decorated, classy, and pretty quiet, although laid out a bit funny. The main entrance is actually on the side of the building - if you come in the front door, you have to walk through the dining room to get to the lounge and bar area, but there‘s not much that can really be done about that. Staff is friendly and attentive. Definitely the best Thai/Asian place in town!

If you want great thai cuisine and a wonderful, quiet/jazzy atmosphere, this is your place. The quality of the food is amazing. It does take a bit, so don‘t expect to get out in a half an hour (every dish is always cooked perfectly - I recommend the Panang Scallops). You go to this place to enjoy food and enjoy the company of people you‘re with.
