Everyone raves about the thick crust, which is good, but the sleeper here is the Sam‘s Recipe thin crust. Trust me, I am a fat dude so I am credible. Best pizza in Story County.

Wonderful, premo, tremendous, delicious and darn it, people just like it. The Denver is amazing...one of those items in life that one begins to think about how and when it can be partaken in again. Absolutely worth the trip. Remember to order extra as the "left-overs" warm up perfectly in the oven.

Tried it again, possibly worst Pizza I have had there. Crust is never cooked properly. Pretty much disgusting. The cookie was completely raw also. Last chance, won‘t go back!

I love this pizza. I‘ve tried all of their crusts and they‘re all a good choice. I choose the wheat crust. I love that I can smell and taste the yeast and freshness of the crust. I‘m a bread fiend and it sends me over the edge!

My husband prefers the thinner crusts. Ylou can never accuse them of skimping on the toppings, they are generous with cheese and all of the fixings. I will say the lunch rush is sort of crazy and anything more than a slice is going to be a wait.

It‘s definitely one of the better pizza places in Ames. However, the crust isn‘t that special to me. It‘s good, but nothing more than a typical wheat crust. I‘d say this place ties with Jeff‘s pizza for best pizza in town in my opinion.

I only got one thing to say about Great Plains Pizza, IT SUCKS ASS!

Wonderful pizza, tons of cheese and great crust. Even their thin pizza is thick, so it does take a while to cook, but it‘s well worth the wait. I really, really missed their pizza when I moved away from Ames!

I came here for lunch recently and really enjoyed it. For lunch I got 2 single slices of pizza, both very big, and a soda all for a little less than $6. It was quick and very delicious. The atmosphere is very "local" but is still comfortable. I did give it 4/5 stars because the customer service could be a lot better. The men working had to be asked by another customer to clean some tables because there was nowhere to sit, and they just weren‘t very friendly. But I‘m glad I discovered this place for lunch and I will definitely return. I would recommend it to a friend.

A little pricier, but much more interesting than your standard pizza place. I love the Chicago-style wheat crust, which you can dip in the provided honey. Very filling! My mom insists on going here every time she comes to visit me at school. The restaurant is small and popular, so it‘s been pretty packed almost every time I‘ve been there for dinner - not much they can do about that aside from move to a new building. Be prepared for a wait. Still, great pizza!

I love this place. When my family is in town we always eat at Great Plains. Sure, the food comes slow but it‘s still the best tasting pizza in town.

This place has good pizza, but expect to pay an arm and leg for one, then dedicate at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours of your afternoon or evening waiting on your food.
Great plains has been in business for a long time which is respectable. However they really need to tone down the high prices and offer hard working folks a bargain from time to time. They never have coupons or deals as other pizza joints do.
This makes it very hard to give them my business.
On a positive note the pizza is very tasty.

Their pizza is very good...and filling! I often go there for lunch and all I need is one slice to get filled up. (I think it‘s $1.50 a slice or something like that, so it‘s a great deal at lunch time.) If you love cheese, this is the pizza place for you! The crust is a meal in itself - with the honey they supply, you have your meal and dessert all in one...yum! Speaking of dessert, they make the most awesome monster cookies (oatmeal with m&m‘s). They‘re big cookies - homemade, warm and yummy! The cookies go fast so you need to get their early for lunch before they‘re all gone. (I don‘t know if they have them at dinner or not). Service is kind of slow, but they know it and I don‘t think that will ever change (they sell t-shirts and through the years, some have shown a grim reaper or said something to the effect of ‘the best is worth the wait‘). GPSD is an Ames tradition - I love their pizza!

Lots of dough and cheese. Sausage has an off-taste to it. Lots of congestions when ordering. Dining area makes me feel claustrophobic. Lack of proper food handling in kitchen.

I only have had their thick crust, both wheat and white. It is a very unique type of pizza relative to others in town. I don‘t think the taste is anything exceptional but if you want something above the average delivery joint in town this is a good break.

Amazing!! but yeah, like everyone said it‘s slow. Plan on getting there early if you plan on eating around dinner time.

Most likely the best thick pizza you‘ll find. The thick rolled Denver crust is like no other, and you talk about alot of cheese!! Counter help could use some speed and be prepared to bus your own table, apparently the establishment does it their way and figures that the pizza is worth the inconveniences. And quite honestly, it is.

Still the yardstick for pizza in Ames. Everyone always raves about the thick crust, which is good, but don‘t overlook the Sam‘s recipe thin crust. Reasonable prices for the quality. Their counter service would probably have to be their weakest link, but still passable.

Awesome pizza! The BEST is no lie at this place! We had enough for left-overs. Very friendly staff, and we love the new upstairs dining area. This is by far the BEST place to eat pizza in all of Iowa!

As their slogan goes, ‘The Best‘ pizza in Ames, and they‘re not joking! I have college friends from ‘back in the day‘ who make a point to eat at GPSD when they come back to visit. Their pizza by the slice lunch menu is a great value. And their monster cookies are to die for. They‘ve added an upper seating area which has helped lessen the demand for seating. Staff could be more friendly and service oriented, but overall, this is the best pizza around!

great place, best pizza you‘ll ever eat, lunch deal is the best where you can get it by the slice and for the guy that said you can‘t get free refills I don‘t know what your talking about

No free refills on soda, they sell it by the glass, the eating space is crampt and the tables wobbly and crampt. Often there are some punk kids working the place and unfriendly. The pizza is good but I suggest take out or delivery

The Oat Crust is thick, but it makes for the best pizza in Ames. Its not the typical midwestern cracker, but actually has some weight to it.

Great Plains Sauce and Dough has the best pizza I‘ve ever had. It‘s pizza made the way pizza was meant to be. Great crust, lots of cheese and fresh ingredients.

I‘ve ordered twice, trying to see what my friend sees in this pizza --- but it just doesn‘t do it for me.

Come here for great pizza, unlike any other that I have had anywhere. Interesting twist is the honey for the crust. Order the Buffalo and a pitcher, a small pizza is plenty for a couple.

This is an Ames area classic. To really enjoy your experience here you need to have the thick crust pizza. This is the claim to fame. This is "thick" pizza, not deep dish. It‘s got a style all of its own, you can choose white, wheat and oat crusts. I personally am not a fan of their sauce, but it is muted with the 5 lbs of cheese you get on these bad boys. If you are in the Ames area, this is a "must" on your list, and is vying for the Pizza Championship of Ames.

Best Pizza I‘ve had in Ames. However, it may seem just a little above average when compared to pizza outside of Iowa. Iowans tend to smother everything with cheese. That said... don‘t order extra cheese or you‘ll be blocked up for a couple of weeks. It is good pizza though... and I continually go back. Go with the thin crust or you‘ll be full after one slice.

Having problem typing because my keyboard is covered in drool just thinking about the exquisite goodness that is Great Plains Sauce and Dough Coimpany.

Interesting setup with no waitresses, but the food is very good.

I love the cheeses on the thick crust pizza, but my husband likes the thin crust. Often too busy - and often no one cleans the tables, so you end up just stacking the dirty stuff on the edge.

Best thick crust pizza arounbd--but actually they make a decent thin crust too. Good sausage and sauce. Go with the oat crust.

This place is always packed, they serve honey with their pizzas because they make their crusts with beer (and it goes together in some strange way!). Excellent, not too pricey either.
