Restaurant - German
Formerly the Viking Restaurant. The restaurant is attached to the Viking Hotel and is on the main drag of Story City about a block and half from I-35. The menu features a wide range of possibilities from steaks to vegetarian items. The main reason to eat here is the page and a half of authentic German items. Favorites include the several variations of Schnitzel, the Sausage plate, and the Koenigsberg meatballs with capers. This is all featured in bright, new clean environment that really has a distinctive German feel for design. Prices are very reasonable considering the portions.

The owner is back and the quality of food and service are back to where they were when they first opened !! Great schnitzel, goulasch and other authentic German dishes made from scratch. If you think the Hessen Haus is good then you haven‘t had real German food until you‘ve been to the Old Hamburg !! Will definitely be back again !!

Thank you Lord ! The old owner is back and cooking. Wait times are back to normal and the food quality improved greatly. I suppose a German Restaurant needs a German chef that knows what he is doing. Prices are very reasonable compared to most Restaurants.

Best Jaegerschnitzel I‘ve ever had and I‘ve had a lot of those before in Germany.

Nice little Restaurant. What a shame it is so far away from Ames for a quick beer. Enjoyes my food and beer.

Dear Melissa Severson!
So what you are saying is, that you waited 1 hour to get the attention of your waiter ? Which food did you have that was sub par and what northern German food did you eat ? What did the waiter do that was unprofessional ? See if you answered those things in your "review" people might get something out of it. The way you wrote your "review", you sound like a disgruntled ex-worker or else.......

After reading the reviews on this website I decided to stop into Old Hamburg on my drive back home to Kansas City.
I am sure my constructive feedack will not be posted, as it seems only the good comments make it through your screening process.
I have to say I was terribley dissapointed from the time I sat down and waited almost an hour to be served, until the time I left. The food was very sub-par, the service was extremely unprofessional, and over all I felt "Old Hamburg" was an extremely poor representation of authentic northern German cuisine.
Hopefully you will post my feedback and give the readers a more realistic review of your establishment.

No problems with my food. Everything was fresh and nice.
Beer was tasty but took some time. However the table tent explains why the beer takes longer.

I have visited the Old Hamburg Restaurant many times. The atmosphere is wonderful, the people who work there are very friendly and helpful. The food, my goodness, was delicious!!!
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I have never waited over 45 minutes for my main course, even on a busy Saturday evening ! The food is freshly prepared and tasty. I enjoy the wheat beer. Always nice to come to this place.

After living in Germany for 4 years, we moved to Ames and were excited to try out the Old Hamburg. Once we arrived we were quickly seated. After receiving our menus, we were left for about 15 minutes before our drink order was taken. We were then left alone for about another 20 minutes before we received our drinks and were asked by a different waiter if we had ordered our food yet. The other waiter took our order for us and said he would go put the order in. We then sat there for an hour and 15 minutes. We understood that it would take some time to make our food. After this wait we asked the waiter about how much longer it would be for our food to be ready. After checking with the cook she informed us that it was going to be a "very long while". At this point we decided to leave. In all we spent about 2 hours in this place and still had a very long time to go for our food. If planning on eating at the Old Hamburg, plan to spend at least 3 to 4 hrs. The atmosphere was rather cold and unfriendly unlike the restaurants in Germany where they were warm and rustic.

I dont know what the previous "reviewer" wants to say, maybe he has never even been here. Constructive criticism would be: I had this and it was .... or whatever. Since you said you were the only customer you should have opened your mouth and tell the Restaurant manager you did not even need to hide since nobody could hear you. I for one do not believe in your customer story, I have never had any problems and I am proud that this Restaurant exists in Story City.

I can‘t believe this place is one of the "most visited" and one of ‘Ames‘ top restaurants. I was not happy when i visited this place after seeing all the ‘rave‘ reviews on this site. There was not one other customer in the place and yet the service was poor and food was not very good. The beer selection, as the previous people comment on, could be better as well.

I visited Ames for business with CyRide and I read the review here and I checked out this place. This is the real shebang. My fave German restaurant back home sadly closed (it was called Berlin) and once I tasted the salad dressing I knew it was authentic. I also bid farewell to the waiters in the little German that I knew. I was quite full at the end and the prices were reasonable. Cordon Bleu was a nice treat in the middle of Iowa!

Very well run Restaurant. Well worth the drive from Ames. Food and beers are great. Truly unique.

Delicious food and extraordinary service. I hesitated at first, since I did not know what german food is. I am glad my buddy talked me into going in. I really enjoyed it and I will be going back.

This is one of the nicest places in Story county.

Excellent dining experience. The service was courteous, attentive, and helpful. The food was glorious. I highly recommend the ghoulash, but don‘t expect your mom‘s ghoulash with hamburger, macaroni, and tomato sauce. This ghoulash has tender pieces of pork in a flavor rich sauce that is sweet, smoky, and spicy all at the same time thanks to the paprika. It is served over penne pasta. The salad that comes with the meal is accompanied by a sweet carrot salad. My husband had the sauerbraten. I don‘t know which entree I liked more. We‘ll definitely return to Old Hamburg. Keep up the good work. You have much to be proud of.

We are visiting this Restaurant on a frequent basis and never had a bad experience. The service is courteous and efficient. The food is prepared fresh hence it takes a while as a sign on the door will advise prior to entering. For the people who cant wait and relax there is a Happy Chef and a McDonald adjacent!

Not the number one restaurant in ames. oh and it isn‘t in ames. food just average. service was poor. although this will not be posted because they only post the good comments about this place on here.

We spend Mothers Day in this Restaurant and would like to recommend it to anyone. Very tasty food and pleasant service. Keep it goin......
April 18, 2009

My wife and I went to OH on Friday and found the service to be excellent, the food to be above-average, and having a decently diverse German Food menu. I have been to Germany several times and spent several months just South of Hamburg and found the menu to be true to the tastes and menus of Northern Germany restaurants. Although uncertain if spaetzle (sp?) is native to Northern Germany cuisines (although available in most restaurants throughout Germany), it is one side-dish item I wish was on the menu. Further, I know that it would be hard to have several German beers on tap, I do wish there was a greater selection than three types of Warsteiner .... All and all, this restaurant waas a pleasant surprise and largely authentic Northern German restaurant.

Heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, so my expectations were set very high. It didn‘t disappoint. I agree with the last post. This is a very well run restaurant. It‘s clean, comfortable, the service is great, and the food was outstanding! We‘ll definitely visit again because we have a list of things that we want to try that we weren‘t able to on this visit. The owners take pride in their restaurant and the food it serves, and it shows. They have a lot to be proud of, and we‘ll go back again and again to support their efforts.

What a great surprise!! My wife and I were traveling and stopped off I-35 at Story City. We thought we were going to have to eat at a fast food place and just by chance saw Old Hamburg Restaurant. The food was great. Will stop there again when we are traveling to the MPLS.
March 27, 2009

Excellent food. The poster before me should at least mention what he had to eat. We never had a problem with any of their food and we eat up and down the menu. My husband and I usually have two different meals and share our plates. As far as the speed is concerned: a sign at the entrance states that food is FRESH and waiting times are longer than a fast food joint. The longest we waited on a Friday evening was 45 minutes for our main course. We had bread, salad and drinks immediately. Secondly, the staff always asks how the food was, so an honest answer would go a long way also
March 25, 2009

I have tried to write a rating on here before but it seems they only post the postitive ratings. I drove to this place from Ames. I was not satisfied. I read all of these "rave" reviews on here and it was not worth it. The food was average at best. Very slow as well. I will not be back.
March 22, 2009

Came in from Des Moines, after we heard from friends about this place. We were not disappointed. The food was prepared delicious and plentiful with a very tasty mixed house salad before the meal. I never new carrots could taste this good! I am also not a coleslaw person, BUT this one I ate, it was to die for. All in all a very pleasing evening. Thank you very much!
March 19, 2009

Fresh, delicious and affordable. One of the tastiest lunches I had in a while.
March 8, 2009

I was here with my Book Club. The food was excellent and the service courteous. Preparation time was a little longer, BUT they cook fresh, which I could taste and really appreciated.
February 27, 2009

What a restaurant should be. The restaurant itself is cozy and immaculate! The service is great. If you don‘t know what to get, ask your server. They were happy to discuss menu options, inquire about our tastes, and make recommendations accordingly. The Goulasch, Sauerbraten, and the Konigsberger Klopse are my personal favorites. A bowl of French Onion soup makes a great starter. You should not be in a rush when you visit this restaurant. Everything is made fresh and to order, so it takes a little while longer to get your order, but well worth the wait. We love talking over a cold glass of beer while we wait. A visit to Old Hamburg makes for a special night out. Keep up the good work!
February 12, 2009

Just discovered this Restaurant and have to admit, that I am very pleased about it. I am staying at the Hotel next door and only tried because I could not be bothered to go elsewhere. Man I am glad I tried. I am visiting very regular while staying here.

great place, i love schnitzel and beer. they are now offer appelstrudel, one piece is enough for two. will be back soon
February 3, 2009

Perfect little Restaurant. Nice niche market. The German cuisine is very tasty. Can‘t compare to the real Germany because I have never been there, but people tell me it is authentic (well at least the chef is German) and I do like the taste, that‘s all I care about. The prices are very reasonable!
January 29, 2009

The food! The service! Can‘t say enough good things about this restaurant. Worth the short drive to Story City. Try the French Onion Soup, the Sauerbraten, and a beer. You won‘t be disappointed.
January 13, 2009

LOVE IT!! I‘ve been going since they opened and never been disappointed!
January 10, 2009

Went here for the first time and could not have been happier. Great prices: we (2) had beer, entrees and a dessert for $30. The food was to die for! I loved the combination of textures and flavors balancing each other. Also, the waiter was German as well, which was fun. We will be making the trip at least once a week now and you should too!
January 4, 2009

My family went here after the Dec ‘08 ISU graduation ceremony. We had 10 people in our party and received great service. The food was perfect and the prices were very reasonable. The portions were also very big. This was our first time to Old Hamburg and we will definitely be going back. A very easy drive up 35 to Story City from Ames.
January 4, 2009

This may be a Midwest best kept secret. We love the German cuisine and home style cooking together with very reasonable prices. This out of the way restaurant is owned and managed by Germans (the wife in English) who take their authentic German cooking seriously. The real mashed potatoes will have a few lumps to prove it. The menu offers a good selection of traditional German meats, vegetarian plates, and salads…Add a good bottle of German wine or an authentic draft beer…and enjoy. We have been there twice, most recently with our visiting son and his (German) wife who gave their meals a high rating (comparing with home). The owners do their best to make this a relaxing time.

I work for a large German company with branch in Ames at Exit 113. I do frequent this little Restaurant every time I am in Ames and I enjoy my food like "home" away from home. What does the comment from the person of Oct.20 want ? I am German from Germany. Am I not allowed to comment on food or do I need your approval first ? It is ok for someone who studied in Ames and lives in Chicago to comment, but not for a German living in Germany ? Grow up....... The food in this place is delicious and the service friendly. Maybe the writer of Oct. 20 should stay in Ames and frequent McDonalds instead, it is faster!
Keep up the good job Sharon and dont let id.... get you down.

I love this Restaurant. The Snitzels are to die for and the salad you get before the meal is divine and fresh !!!
October 27, 2008

We had no problem with the food or the beer, even though they only have 3 german beers on tap.
October 27, 2008

I am a member of a wine tasting group that meets monthly. October was to be our "German wines" tour, and wisely, a group of us were able to make the journey from the Des Moines, WDM, Urbandale and Waukee area for our October sampling.
We found Sharon and company to be very helpful and accommodating to our needs. We were given a reserved section (seats up to 12) and provided with wine glasses for red and white tasting. We chose two superb whites from the in house cellar and brought in two of our own (a nominal $10 corkage fee). We paired these wines with selections from Old Hamburg‘s diverse menu.
We had a splendid time and plan to make a return trip in the future. Who would have thought that such a gem exists in our midst in Story City?

We visited the Restaurant on 10/25 and were delighted with the food and wine. Yes, we drove from Ames and it was well worth the short drive. The previous rater obviously appreciates more the fast/junk food and yes he is right it would be too far from Ames for that, he has plenty right there!
I wish more niche Restaurants like this were available, and no I am not staff of the Restaurant!

I came to this place to eat as there are over 90 comments on here and it is rated #1. I would not reccomend this restaurant to people in Ames. It is not worth the 15 minute drive. There are many more places to eat in Ames that have better food. I found the service to be slow although friendly. The food was average at best. Also, they do not have a very large selection of German beers when there are so many available at a local liquor store in Ames. I also do not think looking at the comments that someone from Germany would take time to go to this site devoted for Ames to write a comment about this place so some comments do not appear to be authentic and written by the place itself.
October 19, 2008

We did visit this Restaurant while working in our US plant. We did enjoy the real German beer and food. This is exactly the way we would have eaten in Germany.
October 17, 2008

Very cozy little Restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We will visit again when we pass on the Interstate.
August 19, 2008

I ate here with my family for my birthday. This place is awesome. Wonderful atmosphere.
The food is excellent, the chef is great (and is German btw).
There is only one brand of beer, Warsteiner, but, Warsteiner Dunkel is very good. Do not try Warsteiner Pilsner, I don‘t think it is a taste we Americans like much :/ It‘s sorta odd.

Wonderful!!! Although it is about a 20 minute drive from Ames, believe me when I say it is WELL worth it. The food was absolutely fantastic and unique, with very genuine and delicious German cooking! Prices are reasonable, and staff is friendly.
A true Five-Star restaurant.

I had dinner at the Old Hamburg Resturant for the very first time on Friday, 15 Aug, 2008. Being from out-of-town gave me a good opportunity to try the cuisine. To put it in German, "Es war einfach ausgezeichnet!" (It was simply fantastic!) The food was delicious, as was the wheat beer, a German specialty. I had the "Wurstteller" or Sausage Platter. Others around me had German dishes from the menu with equal delight in the quality and quantity of food. My only disappointment was that there was no "Rotkohl" (red cabbage) on the menu. That is one of my German favorites, however, the owner explained to me that the cost to make it fresh versus the demand made it a hard sell. He won‘t serve it out of a can or jar. No problem. Everything there is freshly prepared, so your order takes a tiny bit longer to come out, but it is well worth the wait. I will definitely be eating there again on my next trip through Iowa.

What a nice surprise! We really enjoyed our meals, and thought that the food was particularly fresh and well prepared. The apple cake that we had for dessert was divine. And the wait staff was excellent. It is definitely worth the drive from Ames.

We stay at the Hotel and got send to eat at this place. We were very reluctant at first, but the food is first class.
July 5, 2008

We have eaten at the restaurant several times and the food is always very good. The host and hostess are very helpful. I am working my way through the schnitzel area of the menu. We had a special birthday party and requested that they make sauerbraten for us. They did and it was excellent! I suggest that they have a ‘House Special" one Friday night of the month with sauerbraten and warm Bavarian potato salad. Since it would be the special they wouldn‘t have to have too many portions and when it is gone -- it is gone. that‘s what a special is. I‘d be there!!!
June 25, 2008

I came here from Webster City with my family (off the boat German) and we were very impressed. We will definitely be back for more.
June 18, 2008

I had to wait a long time. I think most restaurants make their food to order so the sign is not special. The food is average.
June 18, 2008

I am following the comments here for a while and I am amazed about some. I am eating here on a regular basis and never had a bad meal. The service is fast and efficient depending on the amount of guests present. They even put a sign on the door saying: Please allow for extra time, this is not a fast food establishment. If you cant wait for good food or dont have anything to talk about to pass time, may I suggest McDonalds or Happy Chef next door.
June 17, 2008

We were in Story City for a convention and take part in their Scandinavian Days celebration. My wife and I and another couple had one of the best dining experiences we‘ve had in years! The owners of the Old Hamburg Restaurant answered questions, visited and had fun with us which made the whole experience just great. Oh, and the food, OUTSTANDING!! And the desserts... to die for. If you‘re close to Story City, DO try it. You won‘t be sorry.
June 17, 2008

One of the nicer places we visited on our journey.
June 17, 2008

We were quite pleased with our visit to this place. The food does take longer to prepare because as the sign says when you come in, it is prepared fresh and to order. It was worth the wait for us. We will go back when we are in the area again.
June 14, 2008

Unbelievable food. I lived in Germany several years ago and fell in love with the food. When I walked into the Old Hamburg Resteraunt all the smells made the memories come rushing back. The food was outstanding, the service was wonderful. I have not had that good a meal for such a long time. I will without a doubt be back and on a final note......... make sure you save room for dessert!
June 13, 2008

I am the owner of the Old Hamburg and I like to comment on some "reviews". Firstly calling food average, without letting anyone know what they ate is ??? For all I know he could have ordered Scrambled Eggs and yes, they would be average, hard to imagine that someone could screw those up. Secondly waiting time. The "Reviewer" makes believe, that there are only two other tables sitting and he waited 45 minutes. Were the other two tables tables of 16 people and 14 people or just tables of 2 ? We have waiting times of 45 minutes if we have around 30 plus people walking in at the same time, because we do not microwave or Crockpot. We cook everything fresh and to order! If some people write "reviews" they should be specific and give qualifying details so we can check on it, or even better tell us to our face when we ask you how everything is and was. As a Restaurant owner I do not mind people telling negative things, however how can I change issues if they can not be quantified. Any Restaurant can only improve with constructive criticism.
June 13, 2008

I would also agree with the last two comments. I went to this place from south ames and it did not meet expectations. There are so many comments on this site about how great and authentic the food is and how wonderful the service is. My expectations were not met unfortunately.
June 13, 2008

To the person who wrote on 06/10/08....The reason it takes a while is because all the food is prepared fresh. It‘s not flash frozen deep fried food. The need for instant gratification in this country is disgusting.
June 10, 2008

We had a similar experience, also. The food I thought was average, but the service was really poor. It took about 45 minutes to get our entrees and and only a couple other tables eating at the time.
June 10, 2008

If you like an average restaurant then this is your place. The food that I had was ok. With the gas prices as they are today, I would rather eat in Ames.
June 5, 2008

No problem with service and food quality. The meatballs with capers are delicious.
June 4, 2008

I eat there often, it is my favorite restaurant! I just adore their food!
June 2, 2008

My mom‘s is a straight off the boat German, and she thought it was pretty darn good, and she‘s a heck of a cook herself. I thought it was great too.
June 2, 2008

It was outstanding. Just happened to be driving by and didn‘t want the same ol‘ burger. I will be back for sure!!!!

Great, authentic German food. With so many different entrees, it is hard to get bored of the food there.
May 22, 2008

We are a group of bikers staying here at the Viking Hotel. We initially hesitated going in a German Restaurant, but man we loved it. The food was awesome and not blend as someone said it would be. Try the Schnitsel.
May 21, 2008

Exceptional food and service, the owner had great conversation and knowledge about Germany and its history. It was a great and I will go back often.
May 13, 2008

Great Rerstaurant, great service. I will be back.
May 13, 2008

Agreat place to eat with friendly service and good tasting food. The potato soup with sausage is to die for!!!!!!!
May 9, 2008

Awesome food, awesome service and reasonable prices. What else do I want?
May 7, 2008

I worked off and on in germany for a number of years, and never had anything this good. One word - wursteller sausage sampler!
May 7, 2008

Delicious home cooked food, in pleasant surroundings. We enjoyed the wine, beer and personal attendance. Worth the drive.
May 7, 2008

I love the Schnitzel and the beer. I come here often after work just to unwind with a Wheat beer.
May 5, 2008

My boyfriend and a friend of ours (from Hamburg) came to this restaurant. We were not expecting anything too authentic as this is central Iowa, but were pleasantly surprised. The schnitzel and potato soup are wonderful!!! The waiters were extremely open and talkative and we will definitely be eating here again!
May 4, 2008

We stayed at the Hotel just because we wanted to try the attached Restaurant. We were not disappointed! The Restaurant is very clean and the service impeccable. We will stop here on a regular basis as we travel through from Texas to Minnesota.
May 2, 2008

My wife and I are foodies and this place exceeded my expectations. The wine and beer were truely wonderful and the sausage is not something you can buy in central Iowa. A truely great find.
April 30, 2008

I had nothing but good experiences in this place. Does not know what the previous comment is refering too.... Maybe just spiteful.......
April 30, 2008

Did not have the best experience at this place. The food did not meet my expectations.
April 29, 2008

Yes, this is food to dream of. I wish I lived closer to this Restaurant so I could visit more often.
April 9, 2008

Very cozy Restaurant with a nice color scheme. Relaxed atmosphere and brilliant food from friendly server. A must visit when in the area. A+++++++++++
March 26, 2008

Extraordinary food all made as it is ordered. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for a taste of true German cuisine.
March 22, 2008

We‘ve eaten here several times, each time the food and service were excellent! The kids love the schnitzel. The family style at Sunday lunch is wonderful, and they accommodate extended family groups very well. The evening meals have more menu options. I only wish I could get down there often enough to try every one of them! We live about 40 minutes away so it‘s a special trip for us, but it‘s become a family favorite. The food takes a little longer to prepare [since it‘s real food made the real way], but even with 2 toddlers, it‘s never seemed like it‘s taken too long. We love the food, and for those in a hurry, you should stick with chain restaurants that get all their food pre-made, pre-processed, pre-cooked and they just assemble, or a sandwich/sub shop. This is definitely one of the highlights of Story City.

i have been to germany and the food here was just as great the service was excellent the it was the most enjoyable dinner i had in a long time. I would definately recommend it to anyone i know and I will definately be back again.

Wow, this is my new found favorite. Stumbled on by accident filling my car at Kum and Go next door. You need more advertising so people will find you.

I have taken many of my friends and family to this restaurant since moving to Story City. Everyone that I have gone with has had a great time, enjoyed the food, wine, beer, and enlightening staff. It does take some time to get your food but it gives you time to relax and talk with those you came with. Also, the salad that they serve is something that surprised me the first time with coleslaw, lettuce with dressing, and a shredded carrot part. It is very tasty and sweet. For the menu, I have loved everything I tried.

The food is wonderful and very authentic. the staff is very friendly and great to talk to. They have something for almost anyone‘s tastes. I enjoy trying something new on the menu every time I‘m there...and I‘m there almost every week.
February 24, 2008

We came down from Waverly, where a German Restaurant just closed to try somewhere new. We had the Sunday family style lunch and it was very nice. We cant wait to come back for the full menu deal.
February 20, 2008

My wife and I stopped in last evening, and we we not expecting the EXCEPTIONAL and AUTHENTIC food and atmosphere that we experienced!! I have eaten at an up-scale german restaurant in Chicago (The Burgoff, now out of business) as well as several places in Germany and the Alcase region of France. The food and the beer are equal to The Burgoff and !! And that takes ALOT! Sven and his wife Sharon (from England) were exceptional hosts! We will definitely be back on a routine basis!! Can‘t wait to eat/drink on their patio dining area!!! If there is ever any need for investment here, this would be a great investment!
February 14, 2008

We stay at the Viking Hotel and tried the German Restaurant at the end of the Motel. The food was excellent and the beers are out of this world. Our waiter was knowlegable and friendly and explained everything to us. We will be back.
February 9, 2008

Nice stuff. Really loved it.....We‘ll be back.
February 8, 2008

This is a nice contrast to the fast food you get everywhere else. I sincerely enjoyed it.
February 8, 2008

Very nice place. The owner was willing to take the time and explain the food to me, he even offered me a taster of each of the beers so I could decide which one to take. A++++++
February 3, 2008

What a place. The food is delicious. Wait time is not as bad as some earlier comments suggested, anyhow when you cook fresh is will take longer then microwaved food. The wait staff was very efficient and the place looked very very clean. I loved the bathrooms with full doors and no cracks to peek through with music playing overtoning noises from the neighbors stall.

Best to visit during the week instead of on Sunday. The Sunday meal is served family style but the choices are VERY limited.
December 23, 2007

A great place to eat. Sven is all ways ready to give you a good idea of what to try. Food is fresh and worth the wait.

Old Hamburg is a wonderful restaurant! I walked in the door and just KNEW it was going to be great. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. I am just giddy to find authentic German food so close to home. There are so many tasty, unique dishes on the menu -- picking one is tough! The good news is that they are close to home and I can go back frequently to sample all their different dishes. Highly recommended.

My girlfriend and I just returned from Germany a week ago and were desperately searching for good authentic German food here in Iowa. I must tell you - we definitely found it here! We drove from Des Moines (where we could not find what we were looking for - trust me) to Story City where we were delighted to dine at Old Hamburg! This restaurant TRULY is FANTASTIC! The people who own it are charming, welcoming, warm, and attentive. The food was the best German food I have EVER had in the States and it was truly like being back in Germany! The restaurant itself is charming, clean, and accommodating. I have not been so happy about finding such a restaurant in a long, long time! This is TRULY a GEM of a place and I VERY HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who loves authentic German food!!! And to the owners - FANTASTIC JOB!!! We will be making this drive at least once a month from now on!

My husband and I celebrated his birthday at Old Hamburg a couple weeks ago. It was our first trip to the restaurant. We had read the reviews here on this site, and we were a little afraid that it might not live up to our very high expectations. It exceeded our expectations in every way! The restaurant is immaculate. They take a lot of pride in their restaurant, and it shows. Everyone was very friendly and very happy to patiently help us navigate the menu. We took our server‘s advice and ordered the Konisberger Klopse and the Goulasch. The capers in the Konigsberger Klopse imbue the sauce and pork meatballs with a slightly sour flavor, which we really enjoyed. Paprika gave the tender cubed pork of the Goulasch a delightful aroma, and the sauce‘s spice grew in intensity with each bite, but never overpowered the dish. My husband enjoyed a Dunkel during our modest wait. I had a bowl of delicious French Onion soup. It was a really fabulous dining experience. I highly recommend Old Hamburg. Step outside your food comfort zone and try something new. You‘ll be glad you did! Restaurants such as this are truly something special.

I am staying at the Viking for hunting and for convenience stumbled at the Restaurant at the end of the Hotel.
The first time, being ignorant, I ordered the burger. I watched other people who enjoyed and raved about the German food, so the next day I ventured into trying something new to me. Men was I impressed. The Goulasch and the beer were 100000% excellent.
Thank you guys. Continue the good job.

Was a reminder of all my best days in germany. The food is not gourmet, but classic good home cooking... german style. They have Warsteiner on tap ( Dunkel included! ) It is well worth the trip and a delight for all who make the trip.
November 16, 2007

You get authentic German food and drinks at this surprising small town restaurant. The Germain owner and his staff will explain any dishes you don‘t recognize. The schnitzel is marvelous. After you place your order, you will hear them pounding the meat before they cook it. So far everything I‘ve tried on the menu was worth coming back for. Try it with the family and they will want to come back too.

Fantastic food and fantastic service.
My children truly enjoy every visit to Old Hamburg, not only do they devour the food but they really get a kick out of joking with the owner during each time we dine there.
It has a comfortable atmosphere and leaves you feeling quite satisfied.

Great food and very friendly service. Love to frequent this cozy little restaurant. If you stop in try the Dunkel on tap or light white wines. Adds a wonderful European flare to Central Iowa, not to mention Story City. Even Horse people enjoy eating something different sometimes.!!

I am staying here at the Viking Hotel and by accident stumbled at the Restaurant at the end of the Hotel. I was travelling all day and was tired, not expecting anything. The food that was then served blew me away. I did have a Schnitzel and a salad with a drink for which I paid $11.00.
It is Restaurants like this that make travel a little nicer. Keep up the good work!

Great food and excellent service. Great beer and wines as well.

Love it! They got it right. Price and quality of food is suberb and balanced. Portions are not too small and not too big, just right. The homemade deserts are yummi.
October 16, 2007

Superb value for money. Fresh food at the price of junkfood. Did not mind the wait while having a german wine. Recommend to try!!!!!
October 7, 2007

We were traveling through from the Chicago, and stopped in on 10-06-07. This guy, and his chef, are from Germany, and it shows. I want the chef,‘s recipe for the schnitzel, because it was the best I‘ve had, and we go to a lot German restaurants.
The sides were also great, especially my daughters mashed potatos, which I tried. Oh, and reasonable prices, however, I‘m used to Chicago, which is a rip-off. This place is not to be missed.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Food was excellent and the portions were large, service was fast and friendly. We will definately return for the regular menu when we pass through again.

Best German food I ever had, great beer, great atmosphere.

First visit - Sunday lunch. A limited menu, family-style. Food was excellent, cordially served. We certainly want to return to sample the evening meals. Good Job! Central Iowa needs restaurants like this!

This is a great restaurant! We had some of the best food we have ever had here. The service was friendly and so helpful. Great food, well worth the wait!

The food here was wonderful and the service was friendly and helpful. It takes awhile to get your food, but everything is made right there and is so good, that it is well worth the wait. We had one of the best dinners we have ever had! Definitely a great restaurant and worth your time!

Tis restaurant is absolutely fantastic. Great food, service and atmosphere. The cheesecake is simply the best I‘ve ever had. All the food is made there so its all fresh. More than 5 out of 5.
August 25, 2007

Great place! I had the Schnitzel, which was the best i have ever had.
August 25, 2007

not so great or maybe just not my type of food too much grease!
August 21, 2007

Quality food takes time and this food is well worth the wait. I was in the Amana Colonies (8-20-07), home of supposed " authentic German food" and the food was terrible. The sauce was came from a can and the side dishes tasted as if they had been under a heat lamp. I would rather travel to Story City and have REAL German food (prepared by a German cook) at the Old Hamburg than travel to The Amanas for a mediocre substitute.
August 21, 2007

Plain excellent! Love it, will come back soon.
August 13, 2007

Great food and great beer! Well worth the drive from Ames! The Schnitzel is tender and very tasty - all food made fresh to order!
August 7, 2007

The food and service were fantastic!! Its worth the drive from Des Moines! We will be back!
August 4, 2007

Simply great food and very heart warming service !
August 1, 2007

Wonderful place to eat. The waiting times are a little longer than usual since they make all food from scratch. However it did not inconvenience us, as we had a german beer and wine and a good conversation. It amazed us how impatient people are getting when they have to wait a few minutes for food. Dont they have anything to talk about to each other? If you want fastfood go to the Pizza Ranch opposite, Happy Chef next door or Mc Donalds a block East, but if you want excellent food stay here and enjoy.
July 26, 2007

Excellent! Very friendly service. The Schnitzel is well worth the wait. If you are looking for fast food... McDonald‘s is just down the road... but it would be your loss. A visit to Story City would not be complete without making a stop at Old Hamburg Restaurant.
July 26, 2007

One of the few GOOD restaurants out there. The staff is great, the food is great and now even the beer is fantastic! Any time I‘m by Story City in my travels, i‘ll be sure to dine here.
Allow for a little time to get your food. While you wait have some of the German beer that is sold there, it‘s fantastic! Everything is freshly made for you, so nothing is pre-made. The wait is well worth worth it and I know others will enjoy this place as well.

We have been several times and I have ordered something new every time! Everything has been excellent and now that they have authentic German beers we will be there often. The meals are fresh and served hot-well worth the wait.
July 24, 2007

Don‘t expect to get out of here in under an hour. They even have signs at the front door saying they don‘t crock pot or microwave any food. Can‘t say I know what German food is supposed to taste like, but it was pretty good. I had one of their German beers, and it was great.
Portions didn‘t seem too big, but they were plentiful enough to fill you. Friendly and appreciative staff too.
Probably a good date restaurant, if you are interested in killing time with some conversation, as the food and service seemed to take awhile. So if you aren‘t in a hurry, I would recommend.

Allow plenty of time if you eat here - it took about 50 minutes to get our entrees and there was only about 8 people in the restaurant.

We have been here several times and have always found something tasty and new. The food was carefully prepared, seasoned and very fresh. The carrot slaw was particularly tasty. Be forewarned, if you are coming to Story City looking for Amana style food with heavy sauces and gravies you will be disappointed. This is just as delicious, but spicier, brighter and lighter cuisine from a different region on Germany. Meals are also more reasonably portioned. The proprietor is always a pleasure to speak with and will be more than happy to explain the subtle differences between menu items and German cuisine. A must try.

Super, Super, Super.
This is the best I have had for a long time.
Friendly and authentic. Reminded me of my time in Germany.
