The food was excellent and the chef at our table did a good job. The hibachi grill exhaust hoods needs lights in them so you can see the food being prepared. The air around tables from the exhaust hoods was cold so it made our eating our meal a little uncomfortable.

Love the sushi bar. The chefs are very friendly and are willing to explain the items on the menu. The hibachi bar can be hard to get a seat at on the weekends without a reservation but when we called ahead the wait was less than 10 minutes

We made reservations for a hibachi table at Fujis and when we got there they wouldn‘t seat us because we didn‘t have the whole party. We were only missing one person and when they did arrive we had to wait another 30 minutes just to get the table that we reserved. Also the food was horrible. Definitely never going there again!

Have recently moved back here from Calif. and am used to a lot of sushi, this place is quite good and the wait is reasonable but it is a little pricy due to lack of competition and availablility of ingredients. Enjoyable experience but a little too big for a conversation sometimes...

I had heard a lot of good things about Fuji, so decided to go there for my husband‘s birthday. I was pretty disappointed. Our waiter forgot to give us our first course. He didn‘t come back to our table for quite a while after delivering our main course, so I had to hunt him down by going to the hostess. Service was slow and the food expensive. The flavor of the food was fine, but the other things made it a lesser experience than I had anticipated.

Definitely good food. Can get pricey, but you get a lot of food. I wouldn‘t say the service is bad at all, but if you are at the Hibachi grill, be prepared for a long wait. They try to fill up the spots at the grill, so you could wait up to 20 minutes or more before the cook even comes out. I only plan on going there when I have plenty of time.

We love going to the Hibachi. Our kids really enjoy the show and if you go for lunch and skip the soda it isn‘t any more expensive than McDonald‘s. We split the chicken kid‘s meal between the boys (6 and 3) and I get the steak and he gets the chicken and shrimp tempura rolls. Super yummy food, great service.

We have eaten at Fuji too many times to count! I‘ve never sat at the Hibachi tables, because I prefer sushi. The service is excellent and the food couldn‘t be better! Thanks heavens we finally don‘t have to travel to DSM for great sushi!

I‘m amazed at some of the previous bad service reviews. My boyfriend and I have eaten at Fuji too many times to count and we always have great servers. We‘ve never had to wait for a table and the wait for the food is always reasonable. He‘s the one that eats the sushi, which he always loves, while I get the same dish, Chicken Teriyaki. Always delicious! Everyone should try this restaurant at least once.

I‘ve been to Fuji a number of times and the food is always good but the service sucks. Last time we made a large reservation for the hibachi. After we ordered we were told they would not be grilling it on the hibachi (the reason we came in the first place) because less than half our party was getting food off it. We were never explained this before ordering and we even asked if we could change our orders so we could see the show, but the manager said it was too late. To top the night off, the $5 birthday ice cream and song we paid for ended up in the birthday girl‘s face even after we asked them not to. Talk about bad customer service. Also, the cops showed up that night to arrest an employee! They need to get their act together. The food is good, but I‘ll think about coming back next time.

AMAZING! I can‘t get enough of their sushi, and the hibachi grill is fantastic as well! I‘ve never had something I haven‘t enjoyed and the hibachi chefs are always entertaining!

The food was great!! Love the entertainment of watching the food being cooked in front of you!!!

Great food at fu ji japanese steak house. i will give u 5 stars for service, as well as food. nice place...

Have been there several times. This place is sooo good. The service has never been "omg this was the best service ever!", but the food makes up for this in so many ways. Their sushi, tempura, and hibachi food is all mouth watering goodness. Also, I highly recommend getting a martini with your meal, and topping it off with tempura ice cream. Delicious goodness!

I went with my family on friday night and my grandma had a wonderful time on her first ever visit to hibachi. Mr. big was our chef and he was wonderful! I would recommend Fuji to any family it was warm and friendly.

This place is amazing, great sushi...i love party boat, and hibachi alot of fun!!!

Went once. The Sushi was satisfactory. The hibachi shrimp was like eating erasers. Way over done. Must have been around for awhile. Service was poor. Told the receptionist about the shrimp and her response was like "so what." Don‘t intend to return and will only recommend finding another place to eat.

Went here once when it opened for the dining, and it was ok. Came back later and sat at the Hibachi grill and LOVE IT! Very comparable to Ohana‘s in DSM. Great service, delicious food!

I have been to Fuji several times the food is good, but it is hit and miss on the service. I have had trouble getting the server to understand my drink order. Once I tried to order a Brandy Manhattten, and after a long wait the bartender comes and askes me about my drink order the server told him I wanted a Bacardi manhatten. The bartender made the correction and served me my cocktail. They need to educate there servers about drinks that are ordered.

I love this place!! We go all the time, I love love love the Avacado salad ( I have never once got a bad Avacado there and if you love them like I do, you know that it‘s very easy to get bad Avacados) and The Green River Roll !! I could go on and on about Fuji---the grill tables are awesome too! I like the guy who sings the McDonalds song "ba dat dat da da" !!
If you are into beer try the Ichi Ban beer on tap.

We weren‘t sure, if we should try FuJi Japanese Steak House, because all the reviews that have posted here. however, pass this weekend, my friend invited me there, it was fantastic. not only the food were excellent, staffs were very polite and seated us very quickly, although we had to wait 15 mints, because it was friday, with numerous people there.so what do you expect rite? it was definately worthed to wait. because we had great time and enjoyed all dishes we had ordered.

I would say the place is pretty average for Sushi and hibachi. A little expensive for the quality of food you get and the wait is awful! We had reservations for 6, didn‘t get seated till 6:45 and didn‘t finally eat till all most 7:30. Shogun is a small and quiet Japanese place over in the West Hyvee strip mall that I really like. It doesn‘t come with a show, but the quality of food I think is better and it‘s half the price for the same amount of food if not more (soup, salad, and entree). They also have a sushi chef, which everything I‘ve had is pretty good!

We just moved to Marshalltown and needless to say there is nowhere for sushi and hibachi remotely close by. Fuji is our closest option and we have always been so pleased with the food. The sushi is very good and presented nicely, the hibachi is always great and entertaining. I noticed some comments with the waitstaff...it‘s interesting...they have always been so nice and accommodating to us. As parents of a toddler, we appreciate their warmth toward children. In all, it‘s just consistenly a good experience so we return time after time!
February 28, 2009

My wife and I have been here several times, eating at the Hibachi, sushi bar, and a private table. I have to say, the food has gotten worse since our first experience and the wait staff has followed suit. We have unfortunately gotten the same terrible waitress the last two times, bad luck I guess. This visit was greeted by an incredibly long wait followed by burnt food. I didn‘t want to pay $25 for the night, but too bad for me the bill was around $50. As much as my wife loves sushi, this is our last visit to Fuji in Ames.

Overall the food is pretty good, but everyone has hit the nail on the head... service is lacking. I‘m just saying if I spend $60 for dinner, I expect service to match.
But I‘m sure the next review will disagree. Seems like after every negative review, someone is quick to praise this restaurant. They need to let me know which night they go, I‘ll ride along.

You must go for the lunch specials..you cant beat the prices. Under $10 for a filet mignon and plenty of side dishes along with it. Very filling and a fantastic show!! The fanciest restaurant in Ames, Ia.
February 13, 2009

In all fairness, my review is based on only one visit, but our experience seems to be the same as some of the other reviewers. While the food was good, the value for the dollar and service were not so good. We chose to eat at a private table. It was our misfortune to be sitting right by the wait staff‘s hang out spot. We listened to the same loud waitress tell the same tired story to every employee who came within range. They stood leaning against a wall, watching us eat. A little privacy so we could hold our own conversation would have been appreciated! Our waiter, though very polite and attentive, was extremely hard to understand. We have not been back.

Pretty decent...people who have never been to a Japanese Steakhouse before will probably think this is the best quality food ever. It is pretty good quality food, but it‘s not the best japanese steakhouse I‘ve been to. Very good for a small town like Ames though. Overall, good food and a nice atmosphere.
January 10, 2009

Fun Atmosphere: This is a perfect first date place. The waiters and cooks are so fun you are bound to have a great time.

Fuji‘s quality of food and their overall niche‘ in the Ames market helps this restaurant. I‘ve always enjoyed the food and the selection, but the service is lacking. There is a fine line between maximizing the amount of people you serve a night, and rushing the customer. I understand to make money a restaurant needs turn as many covers as they can, but at times the wait staff seems pushy. Usually this is experienced when you dine at the hibachi grills. I‘d also like to see the hibachi wait staff not stand at the front of the dinning area staring back at you. A little less hanging out, and more servicing the customer. The other wait staff, that covers the tables and booth, are relatively good. The bartender is quick and makes a good martini. Let‘s hope the restaurant reevaluates their weak points, and improves. I‘m afraid if they don‘t and the food begins to suffer, or they get competition, this restaurant could have serious problems.
December 27, 2008

Ate there this weekend and it was a "poor" experince because the service was "poor". I had to go to the bar twice to get another drink. Staff was friendly, but just clueless when it came to the service aspect of the dining experience.
December 7, 2008

I‘ve eaten at Fuji many times, and I love going there. Some of the chefs are less engaging than others, but the food is always delicious and well cooked. I‘ve ordered many types of rolls (Yellowtail as a simple roll, Dragon rolls for more complex) and they‘ve always been delicious and fresh. If you‘re in Ames and looking for a good meal, you can‘t go wrong with Fuji.

What?!?!?!?!?! Are you crazy, or do you make $ from this place? If you have to eat sushi in Ames , go to Shogun in west Ames, it‘s not as "pretty" but at least you get service. Or go to Cafe Shi, probably the best resturaunt in Ames. I don‘t work there, I don‘t know the owners or anyone affiliated with the place, it‘s just that good.
November 25, 2008

My wife and I have eaten at Fuji three times and each time had excellent food and service. We have always sat in the sushi section, rather than the hibachi tables. The fish has always been fresh and without "age" odor. The presentation of every dish has been superb and artistic. My wife enjoys the appetizers and tempura dishes. I like the sushi, sashimi and udon. Our waitress has been excellent, although I have observed more difficulties with the Asian staff.

It must be true!!! What the last person Nov 10th said, because my wife and I had the exact I mean exact same experience. The waitress was not able to even communicate with us because her english was so bad, she stalked us and pestered us until we finally ordered. Once we got our food we didn‘t hardly see her again. One differrence with the last reviewer is prefere Taki over Ohana‘s.
November 10, 2008

We ate at Fuji this past weekend. The food was very good, and our chef was very good, but I must say the service from our waitress was TERRiBLE!!! We are not from Ames and so we drove for 30 minutes to eat at Fuji and were looking forward to a good time with friends, the waitress spoiled part of that good time and also the kitchen staff needs a different place to "hang out" rather than in the dining room with the paying diners!! I work with the public and customer service is key to having a good business...I hope they get this fixed or they will be out of business. Next time we may have to drive the extra 30min and go to Ohana‘s where we know we will be treated well!!

We went to Fuji on a Saturday evening to meet up with some friends we haven‘t seen in quite awhile. We were seated on time with our reservation and our chef was top notch. However, our waitress was slow, never picked up any empty dishes so we ran out of room at our table, and when we were finished eating she brought us our bill without asking if we would like anymore drinks. I had to walk up to our waitress to tell her that we would like to order some more drinks and she rolled her eyes at me. She brought us the drinks and then sat with 5-6 other men staring at our table signaling to us that we needed to hurry up. At one point in the evening one of the bus boys (I believe that is what he was) actually waved his hand in a motion to hurry up. I was very disapointed in the wait staff just sitting around staring that the customers that in their opinion had been there too long. On the other hand the food was great, the price was great, and our chef was lots of fun. If you decide to go make sure you are ready for poor wait service.

Been there twice now and the food was excellent both times. They are excellent at steak! The show is fun and entertaining, if you have kids they will love it!

The hibachi filet and sushi were great, the chef was entertaining, the service was good, and the drinks were tasty and plentiful. All in all, it was fun dining experience.

Would like to eat here every meal . All the time it is important to eat here and not spend to much money for a great meal.

My husband and I ate here for the first time tonight and we loved it! Our chef was amusing and entertaining and the food was delicious. It was a great experience. We can‘t wait to go back! I would recommend this place to anyone!

My husband and i just celebrated our wedding anniversary at FuJi Japanese Steak House last week. i have to tell everyone that, the food were excellent. i will strongly recommend this place to all my friends and families. great servers, plus excellent food. i love the friendly of staffs, as well as the cleanness of the restaurant. it is the best japanese restaurant to dine at any time.

awesome awesome place great food. Have been there twice and have only had minor problems which were fixed quickly.
May 12, 2008

I have eaten sushi all over the country, and Fuji compares exceptionally well. The atmosphere is welcoming, the table side cooks entertaining, and the food overall is excellent.
May 5, 2008

My boyfriend and I ate here, and were extremely disappointed. We both ordered entrees that came with large shrimp but never recieved parts of the meal included on the menu. The waiter had poor English and just kept saying he gave us everything. It was a beautiful restaurant and the show is fun to watch, but the food and service is not worth the price. I would recommend going to Ohana‘s or Taki in Des Moines for better service and food.

Welcome back to Ames Japanese cuisine. I was surprised at the size and quality decor at this establishment. It was easy to get in and get seated, the wait staff was attentive and courteous. We throroughly enjoyed the Bento Box and Sushi entrees that we ordered. The quality of the fish was very good. There were also items on the menu that I as a long time patron of Japanese restaurants that were new to me (a raw conch appetizer for and example). Only recommendation is improved salad and miso soup which were disappointing. I am partial to Nihon cuisine so I will be here often but overall this is going to be one of the most popular eating destinations in Ames.
April 19, 2008

Yeah! Finally a REAL delicious sushi place in Ames! I have eaten there three times since their opening in March and have been very pleased. The only criticism I would make is to improve their miso soup and get a more experienced bartender.

The filet was fabulous and the chef was entertaining. The price was reasonable. I will definately return.

This place is surprisingly large inside with several Hibachi grills. Hibachi chefs are talented, and grilled food is very good. Expect to spend at least $20 on a Hibachi entree if you go that route. They also have a full bar, sushi bar and many booths for conventional dining. Menu is fairly complete (no fugu) for a Japanese restaurant. The place is packed on Friday night so expect a wait.
This is the most awful food in Ames Iowa. Stay away or pay $50 to recycle some fish.
