Downtown Deli LLC

I think it is the owner that is always working and cutting the meat. It is nice to see him in the shop greeting customers and having conversations. Everything is SO fresh and delicious. I have NEVER been disappointed with the service, quality/freshness of the ingredients or prices. Baked goods, soups and salads are also fantastic!

A must-go when in Ames. You will not be disappointed.

I‘ve been going to Downtown Deli for at least 20 years. I don‘t live in Ames anymore, but any time I‘m in town I go there as many times as possible.

For the last two years, I‘ve had trouble finding a place to eat regularly at lunch. A lot of places get too expensive, and others simply lack quality. Downtown Deli, however, has never failed me. High quality ingredients, incredibly friendly staff, and at a great price (i.e a 7 inch salami for $3.50). Although they open at 10 am, they often don‘t have their bread back in stock till 10:30. A very minor complaint when their other options, soups and salads, are very tasty. All in all this is my favorite deli to visit regularly.

Protip: Order the "Downtown Deli Special" you won‘t leave disappointed.

Their wisconsin cheese soup is the best I‘ve had. Quick, friendly, unique. And it is obvious a local favorite by the numbers that visit there for lunch. Good stuff.

Awesome Deli. All sandwiches are made to order. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. They make the sandwich with any specification. I go with the family here regularly and so you can imagine each one has a different taste. But so far they have never messed it up. They are the best, wish there was one like them in every city. Awesome!!!

Every town should have a deli like this. Fresh, tasty and very reasonably priced. My first visit hopefully won‘t be my last.

If you love eating locally, this deli is not only delicious and cheap, but the servers are very friendly. Even if you aren‘t from Ames, you feel like you‘re in your hometown when you step inside and interact with the employees and other patrons.

Its hard to find a cheap, delicious sandwich. But here you go. Everything is made to order, no premade sandwiches here. I love the veggie with hummus and sauerkraut. Where else can you get a 7" sub for under $5. Plus its fun to sit in the front and people watch on Main Street.

My boyfriend and I decided to give Downtown Deli a try. We were more than impressed! The bread was fabulous, the fresh sliced meat and cheese were yummy, and the mayo was perfectly sweet. What a refreshing little place to eat. The staff was very friendly as well! We will now be regulars here!

best price and quality for sandwiches in ames. their 5 cheese sub on wheat is amazing; the hot pepper cheese adds so much flavor. that‘s what i order more often than not, and i‘m not even a vegetarian. and i agree about the cheese soup. yummy.

Decent subs at a good price. Have been here a few times overall happy with the service, prices, and food. Go here early in the day though because they always run out of bread.

Best subs ever. Good, cheep, fast. The greatest cheese soup I have ever found, have to fight the kids and wife to even get to eat my own soup. A must for anyone wanting a good quick lunch.

An absolute gem... super tasty sandwiches (best in town!) and friendly staff. Definitely worth a bit of a wait in line. I grew up in Ames, and I try to hit up the DTD whenever I‘m back in town. Gotta love and support unique, terrific, and locally owned places like this.

This is by far the best deli in town!
If you want a real, fresh made, cut the meat in front of you, made as you order sammy, this is it by far.

What a great alternative to Subway, "The Q" and Jimmy Johns. They have pastrami! Plus you can truly build your sandwich from the bottom up.

how could west street deli be rated higher than downtown deli??? HOW COULD YOU!!!! Down town deli is a place of hope. Hope that our futures could never reach before. My children will be raised not on Christianity but on Downtown deli. My holy trinity is not the father son and the holy spirit, it is capicolla salami and provolone, piled high with love and care.

Cheap food, and great service make it a staple for eating in Ames. Better than any sub place. You can‘t go wrong with their French Dip and a cup of soup

I have literally ate here 400+ times, virtually every day for years while I worked in Ames. The Thumann‘s meats are killer, the butter ecan cake rocks, and the soups are super. The Gumbo is king. Spacey employees kind of add a funky charm, IMO, and no one is nicer than Claude.

it doesn‘t cost more than the place down the street. it is less then subway by far

Nice place for lunch. Costs more than the chains down the road but the meat quality and the service make it worth it. Good soups too.
