One of the best places in Ames to eat authentic Chinese food. The Beef Noodle Soup is one of my favorite dishes, with the Mongolian Combo being close to the top as well. My only disappointment is the lack of a credit/debit card system, but there are many ATMs nearby where cash can be withdrawn. The prices are between low and medium, and the food quality/portions are great. The staff is very nice and friendly as well. In addition, they have some imported drinks in stock, ranging from Milk bubble tea cans to Chinese teas. One of the few places in Ames where I don‘t get the "Orange chicken" stuff shoved up my face and can enjoy some quality food.

I ordered carryout and waited 25 minutes while watching people who came in after me get their food first. When I got my food the chicken in my dish was various shades of brown. Needless to say I found the food disgusting. I will not be returning here.

This place is great, its close to campus and the food is great. The food itself doesn‘t cost too much, which is perfect for me since I‘m a college student.

I could eat a mountain of their potstickers. And they know most people by name/order. Great family run place!!

I love this place. I‘ve moved from Ames now, but every time I go back I HAVE to eat here. Get the Plum Chicken and SPICY crab rangoons.
DELISH!

Amazing food, low prices, everything about this place is incredible.
April 3, 2011

ordered cashew chicken and sweet and sour- both were in exactly the same sauce and the staff refused to switch the order to something that was edible after we complained. Disgusting. Not worth the money. Crab Ragoons were OK.

This is my favorite Chinese spot in Ames. Reasonable prices and excellent food. The owners are some of the nicest people and if all business owners in Ames behaved like them it would be so nice.

What a great place to eat inexpensively! I love their angry chicken (asking for it even angrier was worth it, much to their chagrin!) Great service, clean environment with no thrills, just an overall enjoyable experience. I also like that they offer non disposable chopsticks, way to go green, CHC!

It‘s my favorite Chinese restaurant in Ames. They are very fast and friendly!
November 14, 2010

This place is by far my favorite place I‘ve eaten in Ames - I‘ve never been disappointed. I will say that I try not to order "American Chinese food" specialties (General Tso‘s, Szechuan Chicken, etc.) but try to eat more of the genuine Asian specialties - the pork with string beans is amazing, and so is the rock salt shrimp - fried perfectly!, the combo meals are really good and the hot & sour soup is the best I‘ve had in a long time. Heck this place is so good that I‘m tempted to say it‘s terrible just so it won‘t get too crowded - but seeing as how this place already has so many good reviews, I‘m pretty sure it‘ll be staying the same.
Thanks again CHC!

My husband and I read the reviews on this site and decided we should go give this place a try. The food was incredible, and the place has a really relaxed atmosphere, which we loved! The crab rangoons were fresh and hot, and the sweet and sour sauce was amazing! Loved everything about our experience here!

CHC is awesome! I‘ve since graduated and moved away, but I always make sure to grab a meal here when I‘m in Ames.
The prices are reasonable (make sure to bring cash though!), and the owners have always been very friendly. They have your more generic American-Chinese plates, but I think where they really shine is the soups: the beef noodle soup reminds me of when I was in Taiwan, and the seafood soup is full of delicious discoveries with squid, shrimp, fish cakes, a mussel. Also, I always have leftovers. Yum!

great food!! great prices!! friendly service :)

3 1/2 years eating at CHC they have not failed yet! The food is, as always, superb and the family that operates the restaurant are superb people. They are friendly and try to take a little time, even when busy, too speak with you.
That Hot & Sour soup is the world‘s best, I often purchase a double order, go home, and devour the lot.
Hello to the folk‘s at CHC from The Corn Guy
I always look forward to seeing the husband and wife and the wife yelling from the back of the kitchen "Hello Corn Guy"!!!

Food is great. And this is a place where I can say extra spicy and they give you extra flaming hot spicy unlike those half hearted crap you get at other places.
May 11, 2010

Great food! Reasonable prices. Kind staff! Comfortable atmosphere. Best Chinese food in town!

YUCK YUCK YUCK. Not sure if I went at a bad time or what because from all the other reviews it sounds like this is a great place....but..(it was 6pm), I ordered Sweet and Sour chicken, crab rangoons and egg drop soup. The chicken tasted like it had been sitting for DAYS...hard and VERY DRY. Crab rangoons were dry and had seemed like they had been sitting too. The only thing that was partially warm was the soup...but it tasted as though someone dumped a bottle of soy sauce in it. The side of sweet and sour sauce tasted and smelled like alcohol. I have ordered from here before and it wasn‘t the greatest the last time, but I figured I‘d give it another shot. NEVER AGAIN will I order food from here...I‘d rather go to King Buffet any day. The only reason I gave it a star at all is because the people working were friendly.
April 11, 2010

The chicken was hard and dry, the sweet and sour sauce was awful, and I ordered my food at 6pm.

we love chc! time, accuracy, food...all amazing!! even pricing is reasonable! we love chc!!!

I have been getting takeout at CHC for three years and have never been disappointed in the food or the service. Even though I get takeout, I don‘t call it in but order it and wait; that gives me a little time to chat with the very wonderful couple that owns the restaurant.
The hot and sour soup is too die for, I have never had any quite like it. It has a distinctive flavor and always tastes fresh. I have been to many Chinese restaurants in my 45 years and no other H&S soup comes close.
Try their potstickers too, quite yummy and handmade. I‘ve many times watched the husband making them late at night for the next day.
And the "economic crisis" has not caused them to upturn their prices or downturn the portions like so many other thieves in this country.

If you are use to good chinese food, this is not the place for you. The people were nice, but the food was subpar. Yes it was cheap. However, the orange chicken tasted more salty then like chicken, and there was nothing orange about it.
July 20, 2009

Ate there, liked the owner but the food was awful. Friendly place but if you have a developed palate for good Chinese food, this is not the place for you. Ames really doesn‘t have a good Chinese restaurant and seems to have several poor ones. Go to Des Moines. Surprisingly good variety of good Chinese restaurants there.

By far the best chinese in Ames! Very friendly service, decent time to receive order, and great tasting food!
February 22, 2009

This place is seriously much, much better than Cocost or Little Taipei. Great portions, delicious food, and very friendly and quick service. Also good prices as well. I‘ve been addicted since discovering to this place and love trying new dishes each time I go. Everything has been good!
February 5, 2009

My boyfriend and I discovered this place just a week ago, and we‘ve already gotten food from there twice. It is REALLY good.
January 2, 2009

Wife told me about this place as she liked it in college in the late 90‘s. Went back, same owners, they even remembered her! Best takeout Chinese hands down. Everything is fresh on the spot, not soggy. The sweet and sour sauce is thick and tangy (not the thin pink syrupy stuff you get at a Panda or HyVee). We eat it twice a month at least!
December 29, 2008

BEST CHINESE IN TOWN! -- It is orgasmic. The workers/owners are the friendliest people -- They wait on you and actually make conversation-- always happy and ready to help you. The only con to this place is that they don‘t take credit/debit cards- cash only.
December 20, 2008

Best restaurant of all time. hands down. I moved from Ames years ago and have lived in many a place. Nothing can match CHC. The food. The price. The owners. The ambiance. Perfection.
October 27, 2008

Great place! Great food! Great Owners. They are polite, nice and they are quick with service. Food is great, the will spice it anyway you want it, just ask. Beats other restaurants in the area hands down for Chinese food.
October 18, 2008

My favorite Chinese food in Ames so far! I haven‘t tried everywhere yet but everything I‘ve had here is cheap and really good! The staff are very friendly and always smiling. The only thing is they don‘t deliver, and only take cash, so you have to go in to enjoy it. It is well worth it though!

The best place to get Chinese in Ames... The owners are friendly and always recognize their repeat customers. Plenty to satisfy the most adventurous eater, but still has all the favorites. Try the Spicy Crab Rangoon.
September 24, 2008

Very friendly people working here. Amazing food and always the same quality everytime I come. Best Chinese food I‘ve had hands down.
August 3, 2008

Chinese Home Style is by far the best place to go for Chinese Food in Ames! The Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken are the best! Very Cheap and have never had any problems there.
July 28, 2008

Please. The food tastes so good because its drenched in MSG and other crap. Low quality ingredients, dirty environment, nice people. Whatever.
July 13, 2008

So awesome! We‘ve tried all the other Chinese places in Ames and this one beats them all by far. Service was great and everybody was very friendly. Only took a couple of minutes for them to cook our order and they make it the way you want--if you want it more spicy, etc. We will definitely be back!
June 20, 2008

I‘m much happier now that I‘ve made the switch to CHC... but now I‘m anxiously waiting for the owners to get back from vacation! How could they do this to me?!?!?
June 12, 2008

Best in Ames!! I would never have eaten Chinese before but I went with some people and tried it, absolutely AMAZING!! Loved their fried rice, can‘t find anything better else where. Great prices too! They have the best customer service by far!! Extreamely nice people!
May 29, 2008

very friendly family run place. i‘ve moved to other parts of the country, and haven‘t been able to find chinese food as good as this. best hot and sour soup and you gotta try the spicy crab rangoon. this is one of the places i go when i‘m in ames for a visit.
May 14, 2008

Best Chinese in Ames, hands down. Good prices, good portions, good flavor, good selection.
May 12, 2008

Caters very well to vegetarian dietary needs.
February 10, 2008

This is the best place to eat in ames. I try to go about once a week. on a day like today, when the temp is in the single digits, nothing beats the Spicy Chicken soup with shrimp pot stickers.
January 31, 2008

I love going to CHC with family and friends, the food is great and the service is great and the owners are welcoming and super friendly. I recommend the orange chicken and crab ragoons! The food is of high quality and the atmosphere is a relaxing get away from the high pace of the University scene!
November 23, 2007

I am a Chinese guy. The Beef noodle soup makes me think I was in China! try it out.
November 8, 2007

Terrific food and very affordable prices. The owners are very friendly and always happy to welcome us.

Cozy, family-owned Chinese restaurant that‘s been open for a while now. The "American fare" is good but the more authentic Chinese dishes really shine. The noodle soups are wonderful in the winter, the spicy pork dishes are great in the summer and the specials are great year-round. CHC was my introduction to real Chinese food, and I still love coming home for it.
September 8, 2007

To agree with everyone else, the food is absolutely delicious! My girlfriend and I are new to the area, so we‘re still working our way through the menu, but so far every dish we‘ve tried has been great. We‘ve been to many Chinese restaraunts around Iowa, but CHC is one of the best... especially for how reasonable the prices are. Well worth the drive from Boone.
As far as service... the owners remembered us after only one visit, though to be fair we did spend a while talking with them after our meal on that first visit. Very friendly folks!
My only criticism is the lack of parking... we‘ve been lucky so far by getting the last open spot each time, though it would be nice to see them move to a more spacious location.

spectacular selection and some of the best vegitarian choices in Ames. I recently brought in a party of hungry people after helping me move and spent $44.00 on a party of 8...with leftovers! not to mention the food is fresh and the service ultra friendly!
August 17, 2007

This was a wonderful find! To sound like everyone else this is the best kept secret in Ames. I couldn‘t believe I had been going anywhere else for Chinese or Korean all these years. The staff was very friendly and the food, fresh and flavorful, Thank You CHC
July 6, 2007

Seriously the nicest owners, the best lo mein and if you can‘t decide what kind of protien to chose - go for the asparagus stir fry. I ordered it thinking that you chose the meat out of the list of about 5 diffrent things, no you get it all, scallops, shrimp, chicken, pork, beef...it‘s all in there, for just seven bucks!

This is some of the best tasting, most authentic Chinese food I‘ve ever had. I have "experienced" the Angry Chicken. It is the hottest stuff in Ames since the Indian Restaurant closed down on Lincoln Way. An experience to remember. I really like this place, but I always end up doing the green apple two-step every time I eat here regardless of what I try. So good, I‘ll endure the discomfort for this gem of a restaurant just outside of Campustown.
January 26, 2007

One of my favorite restaurants anywhere! If you have a hankering for spicy and haven‘t tried their legendary Angry Chicken yet, you‘re missing out. The owners are great, they still remember me years after I left town and they take great care of their customers. All the food is delicious and economical.
January 11, 2007

The best kept secret in Ames - the food os great, the service is great, the price is right.
December 15, 2006
Best chinese in Ames. Bargain prices, good food and friendly service. Will definitely return!
October 30, 2006
Best Chinese in Ames. Great food at a super cheap price. Staff is always very friendly.
August 2, 2006
The best restaurant owners in Ames. These guys kick all sorts of butt. Great food and the 2nd best Crab Rangoons in the area. Sorry CHC you are indeed "insane", but New China in Boone has the best crab rangoon I‘ve ever shoved down my throat.
June 30, 2006
Food is always great, hot and ready to eat. Friendly staff - always smiling and eager to help with suggestions.
June 14, 2006
Decent food, poor quality control. Very poor service and the owners are very rude. Watch out for the beef noodle soup because it may not come with any beef,... just lumps of fat and tendons.
March 21, 2006
They have the friendliest staff and the food is the best I‘ve ever had hands down. I eat there at least 4 times a week and tried most everything on the menu. Everything is spectacular.
March 20, 2006
Best Chinese restaurant in town and super friendly service. Don‘t be fooled by its humble appearance, the food is the best and it is insanely cheap!
March 16, 2006
This is some of the best food on the planet. The food is great and the people who own the place are the nicest people ever. I have to go there at least once a week or I go through CHC withdrawl.
March 6, 2006
How can this be rated as "moderatly expensive"?? This place is the best, and at 5 bucks a plate, the only thing cheaper is rocking the dollar menu at some gross fast food place. Fast, frendly service makes me come back time and time again!
February 21, 2006
Great food but place needs remodeling
January 21, 2006
Where‘s the line form? Yes, this IS the best Chinese in Ames, hands down.
December 15, 2005
Best Chinese Food in Town by far, my brother started me going here about 5 years ago, he‘s been gone now for four years and the owners still ask how he is doing. Friendliest people you will ever meet, and best service I have ever had. Most of the food and meat is bought fresh from the grocery store instead of Chain bought. Always fresh and made to order.
December 9, 2005
Best chinese in town, barnone. They have a great customer base, and they remember you and your order if you frequent the place. The owners couldn‘t be nicer, and the food is great. CHC is the reason I stay in Ames:)
November 6, 2005
Great food, great people, every time. A staple of my diet for the last 6 years.
October 3, 2005
After eating here, every other chinese place in town just seems a lot worse...this is the best chinese is Ames.
April 3, 2005
CHC is the best chinese in town. the owners are extremely friendly and accommodating (i only eat there once every couple of months but they always remember me and know my order - broccoli chicken with no bamboo shoots). good cheap eats.
March 31, 2005
Best Chinese eatery in town. Family run, and always friendly service. I‘ve never gotten sick after eating their food, which is more than I can say about any of the other places in town, King Buffet, CoCoast especially ;P
