Thumbs

Tiny hole-in-the-wall bar. Went there on a Monday night, it wasn‘t packed by any means, which is good because I can‘t imagine how it is on a busy night! Good service, good specials, nice place to just kick the shit.

Everybody‘s favorite Ames dive bar. I love Thumbs, most personable staff in town and partying on the patio when the weather is nice is a real treat. Sometimes more than others.

If you want to have a relaxing time out, Thumbs is the place.

Best Foose-ballers in town, hands-down. Tables not the best but these people aren‘t messing around. Cheap drinks, good crowd.

I worked at thumbs from 89-92 and partied at the old thumbs prior. Back then it was Jay managing, murph and tony and lynn and kristin and Matt T. (RIP) and Sue and I bartending. I am sure the same regulars are there every night (diane, yes I have a pickle for your pint). Miss that pool table (bartenders ruled it) and that alley has seen a lot of conversations from the ordinary to the out-of-this-friggin world. It still sounds like the same place with the same open-minded ecclectic crew. It‘s been 15 years, I‘ve made 100X what I made as a bartender there but the best years of my life were making friends at that bar. I will buy it someday :)

oh, and how the heck are G&T‘s the same price now as then. $.75 singles. Don‘t people know gas is $4 a gallon now

Thumbs has an accepting atmosphere, where every one is welcome. The patio is also known as "paradox alley". This is where time stands still or flies by having great conversations with a very diverse clientele. There is a grill in the alley but requires regular cleaning and refills on gas. Thumbs has a large group of women, of all ages, that congregate here. The regulars are called Thumbs "Thussies". We look out for each other and do not allow harassment of other females. This is not where you will find "Barbie" but a repository of intelligent deep people. (Male and female)

I Love Thumb‘s!!! The only reason it gets slow sometimes is because it‘s packed all the time. Drinks are way cheap. I love the patio and all the bartenders rock. It is the only bar in Ames where you can meet people from every walk of life. It‘s a melting pot, and about one of the friendliest places I have ever been to.

worst service in any ames bar. over priced drinks and over weight women sums up thumbs. go to welch if looking for an ames bar experience.

I love Thumbs. Friendlist bar in town for sure! Also, good cheap drinks. Great music! The patio is awesome in the summer!!!

I love this place. There‘s always something interesting going on and the bartenders never skimp on your drinks.

Great environment... If you can snag one of the few tables or spots at the bar, you‘re gonna have a good time. Nice mixed crowd as well, from what I‘ve noticed- not solely pretty boy college students.

Great dive bar for the real people out there that want a different experience rather than just going to the same old place everytime.

Dirty, smelly, and horrible. If you‘re that cheap, then go to this dump. Otherwise, stick to the bars on Welch.

Definately the best bar in the entire campustown area. Good specials, nice bartenders. It gets pretty crowded at night, but its fully of good people, so no worries. The patio is also a great chill spot in the warmer weather

Only been here once. Only stayed for 10 minutes. Too crowded to even get to the bar.
